You have seen them as service dogs and in movies such as Air Bud or Disney Pixar's Up. The Golden Retriever is ultra famous and extremely popular, but how much do you really know about this breed? Read more to find out!
1. They originated from Scotland
The Golden Retriever was developed by a man named Dudley Marjoribanks (also known as Sir Tweedmouth) in the mid-19th Century, spurred by the lack of a retrieving dog suitable for both land and water.
2. They are a cross breed
Although the Golden Retriever is a Pedigree breed now, they were actually derived from cross-breeding water spaniels with existing retrievers. The first cross was between a yellow-coloured retriever and a Tweed Water Spaniel (now extinct).
3. There are 3 types of Golden Retrievers
You might think that Golden Retrievers all look the same and have one single golden coat, but there are actually three types of Golden Retrievers.
4. Not all that barks is gold
Although they are named 'Golden' Retrievers, this breed actually comes in a variety of colours. All Golden Retrievers are yellow, blonde or golden in colour. Most of the time, their fur comes in a spectrum of light golden to dark golden shades. However, other colours such as mahogany or white can occur too.
5. They are the 4th smartest dog breed
Golden Retrievers are very smart. They are the 4th smartest breed in the world, after the Border Collie, Poodle and German Shepherd.
6. Their coat is water-repellent
As their name suggests, Golden Retrievers were bred to retrieve game in the water much like the Poodle. Their top coat is water-resistant to keep them dry, while the undercoat helps keep the dog cool during summer and warm during winter.
7. Presidents love them
U.S. President Gerald R. Ford owned a Golden Retriever named Liberty, and President Ronald Reagan had one named Victory.
Golden Retrievers are intelligent, yet gentle and loving. They make excellent family pets and it's no wonder that even presidents love them too!
