These adorable little fur balls are so full of energy that there will never be a dull moment at home! They make a great companion especially in small houses, but did you know that the Pomeranian used to be a big dog? Read on for facts you never knew about the Pomeranian!
1. They were not always small
The Pomeranian used to weigh an average of 30 pounds and were all white. It was only in the 19th Century when Pomeranians were bred down to be companion dogs.
2. They can be huge again
The gene for bigger Pomeranians still remains in the breed. Large Pomeranians are sometimes still exist and these present-day large Poms are known as "Throwback Pomeranians". The occurrence of a throwback Pom is completely random and they can grow up to 20 pounds.
3. They used to be working dogs
Before they were bred to be small, Pomeranians worked as sled dogs and even herded reindeer. The Pomeranian belongs to the same Spitz family as the Japanese Spitz, which is closely related to breeds originating from the Arctic region such as the Husky and Samoyed.
4. They come in 23 different colour combinations
Yes, there are more than just your white/cream/sable Pomeranians! These are some of the official colours of the Pomeranian.
A blue Pomeranian is not distinguished by its fur colour (which is actually dull black). Instead, its nose will have some blue colouring and its eyes may also be blue.
5. But they don't always stay the same colour
Many Pomeranian puppies change colour as they age. This means that a cream-coloured Pomeranian puppy may turn out to be brown or white as an adult, and there is no way of telling what colour a puppy will be when it grows up.
6. They survived the Titanic
There were at least 12 dogs on board the Titanic. When the infamous ship sank, three dogs survived; two of them being Pomeranians. One was owned by a lady named Margaret Hays, who snuck her dog onto a lifeboat. The other was owned by Elizabeth Rothschild, who refused to get in a lifeboat without her beloved dog.
7. A group of Pomeranians is called a...
As if this dog isn't cute enough, a duo of Pomeranians is called a puff, and a group of three or more is called a tuft. I'd like to have a tuft of Pomeranians, please!
Who knew that such a tiny dog would be so interesting? The Pomeranian is really larger than life!
